■ About the e-Kaga Citizen System and This Demonstration Project

The e-Kaga Citizen System is designed to increase the related population visiting Kaga City for tourism, workation, and multi-location living by providing various administrative services to e-Kaga citizens, who are digital citizens. E-Kaga citizens will be able to obtain original NFTs that serve as e-Kaga Citizen Certificates, as well as access dedicated communities, ride-sharing taxis, and workation services at local accommodation facilities (services to start during fiscal year 2023).

In preparation for full-scale operation in fiscal year 2023, from March 6 to March 24, 2023, cryptocurrency/NFT users, designers, creators, and 100 general participants experienced the system and services as e-Kaga citizens to generate ideas for utilizing the system and identify operational challenges.

■ About Kaga City

Kaga City is located in the southwestern part of Ishikawa Prefecture, adjacent to Fukui Prefecture, with a population of approximately 63,000. It is a region where the aesthetic consciousness reminiscent of the Kaga Million-Koku culture has flourished, consisting of six areas: "Daishoji," where the Daishoji Domain was located; the three hot spring resorts of "Yamashiro," "Yamanaka," and "Katayamazu" in the Kaga Onsen area; "Hashidate," which faces the Sea of Japan and was called Japan's wealthiest village as a settlement of Kitamae ship owners; and "Dobashi," which prospered as a post town on the Hokkoku Kaido road. The city is blessed with abundant tourism resources. However, the population has been declining since its peak of approximately 80,000 in 1985, and in 2014, it was identified by the Japan Policy Council as a city at risk of disappearing. To transform from a "city at risk of disappearing" to a "city of challenging possibilities," Kaga City has been pioneering smart city initiatives ahead of other local governments nationwide. In 2018, it made Japan's first "Blockchain City Declaration," and in 2022, it was designated as the first National Strategic Special Zone "Digital Rural Health Special Zone" in the three Hokuriku prefectures. Currently, the city is promoting regional revitalization utilizing web3 technologies such as blockchain and NFT under the "Kaga City Web3 City Initiative."
